Home Minister and Islamic Minister contesting For AP presidency

Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla and Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Ahmed Zahir Ali have submitted their candidacies for the presidency of Adhaalath Party (AP).

AP revealed two candidates had applied to contest for the post of AP President, by the deadline set ahead of the party’s general election. AP said the two candidates are Home Minister Imran Abdulla, with Ahmed Shareef as his running mate, and Islamic Minister Dr. Ahmed Zahir Ali with Ahmed Nasheed as his running mate.

AP’s general election is scheduled to be held on January 30. Individuals registered as members of AP by January 27 are eligible to vote in the election. The party has opened an online portal for voters to submit complaints on the voters’ registry.

Adhaalath Party is the third oldest party in the Maldives, after Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP). AP was officially registered as a political party on August 18, 2005. According to the latest information released by the Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM), the party has 6,436 members.
