EPA investigating an attempt by a resort to destroy a sandbank

Maldives Police Service (MPS) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has started investigating an alleged attempt by a resort to destroy a nearby sandbank.

The case was brought to the attention of authorities by the island council of Himmafushi, Kaafu Atoll. The council stated a group of residents from Himmafushi had confronted a team of employees from Gili Lankanfushi Maldives Resort that had been digging a trench on a nearby sandbank. The council stated the resort had been trying to destroy the sandbank, which lies in between Himmafushi and Gili Lankanfushi, in order to prevent locals from using the sandbank.

Speaking to PSM News, President of Himmafushi Council Shaan Ibrahim said the case has been officially lodged at MPS and EPA. Shaan said EPA had assured the council that the required action will be taken against perpetrators. Meanwhile, EPA has also stated it is conducting a joint investigation into the case with the police.

Sandbanks are an important part of the geographical formation of the Maldives. As an island nation that is vulnerable to the effects of climate change and other environmental hazards, Maldives is a strong advocate for environmental conservation. However, incidents involving environmental damage have become commonplace in the Maldives.
