Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has announced efforts are underway to produce glass bottles to pack drinking water.

Speaking to PSM News, General Manager Manufacturing of MWSC Ismail Amir said the company decided to begin its transition from plastic bottles to glass bottles as part of the government’s campaign against Single-Use Plastic (SUPs). Amir said the company has already reduced the production rate of plastic bottles, adding efforts are ongoing to produce glass bottles to replace the plastic bottles.

While MWSC has announced the decision to begin packing drinking water in glass bottles, Fenaka Corporation has been contracted to develop a bottling plant in Hoarafushi, Haa Alifu Atoll. Fenaka said 10,000 to 12,000 glass bottles will be produced daily upon the development of the plant.
