Youth Ministry launches NGO Grant Programme

Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment has launched a programme to facilitate financial assistance for projects undertaken by civil societies or non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

The NGO Grant Programme was officially inaugurated during a special ceremony held at the Seminar Room of the Social Centre in Male’ on January 12. The programme was officially inaugurated by Minister of Gender, Family and Social Services Aishath Mohamed Didi.

Speaking at the ceremony held to inaugurate the programme, Gender Minister Aishath Mohamed Didi said a society or community can only achieve progress by empowering each member of the society and helping them achieve their goals. Noting civil societies and organisations are vital to the efforts to empower the community, the minister said the NGO Grant Programme is an important programme undertaken for effective and sustainable development of the community. She expressed hope the programme will enhance the scope of existing NGOs, while also establishing additional NGOs for different social purposes.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment Ahmed Mahloof said the ministry plans to conduct capacity building programmes in 5 regions of the Maldives in order to produce proposals for the grant programme. He expressed hope many NGOs will attend the training programmes and submit grant proposals.

Under the NGO Grant Programme, grants will be issued under three categories; general project grants, small grants and special grants. The deadline for submitting proposals to the programme is February 28.
