HEOC urges resorts to take extra precautions against COVID-19

Health Emergency Operation Centre (HEOC) has urged resorts to take extra precautions against COVID-19, with the increase in tourist arrivals.

Speaking to PSM News, Spokesperson of HEOC Dr. Fathimath Nazla Rafeeq said the number of COVID-19 cases reported from resorts has increased considerably across the past few weeks, coinciding with the peak season of tourism. Dr. Nazla said HEOC is closely monitoring the situation in resorts, through random inspections and sampling. She urged resorts to take special precautionary measures to stay safe from COVID-19 as the situation could easily spiral out of control.

Health Protection Agency (HPA) revealed COVID-19 clusters have been formed in Biyadhoo Island Resort and Sun Siyam Olhuveli Beach and Spa Resort. As such, the latest statistics revealed 53 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Biyadhoo while 24 cases have been detected in Olhuveli.

A large number of tourists are currently visiting the Maldives from different parts of the world. Ministry of Tourism revealed 20,000 tourists visited the Maldives during the first 7 days of the new year.
