President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has revealed plans to hand over all bus services in the Greater Male’ Region to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC). The president made the announcement while delivering his message on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of MTCC.
In his message, President Solih said the government plans to merge the bus services in the Greater Male’ Region, currently provided by MTCC and Maldives Ports Limited (MPL). Noting transport services are part of MTCC’s mandate, the president said the government plans to hand over all bus services in the capital to MTCC by early 2021.
While MTCC currently operates all bus services within Hulhumale’, the buses which travel between Male’ and Hulhumale’ are operated by MPL. The split operations have led to several difficulties for people who travel between Male’ and Hulhumale’ frequently.
In addition to the Greater Male’ Region, MTCC also operates bus services in Kulhudhuffushi City and Thinadhoo in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll. The company also operates ferries in 18 different atolls of the Maldives.
