Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) has stated land rent will be collected by the respective local councils starting from December.
In an announcement released on November 29, MIRA stated the Eighth Amendment to the Decentralisation Act requires land rent to be collected by the respective island or city council. Therefore, MIRA stated the authority will no longer be accepting land rent payments starting from December 1.
The amendments to the Decentralisation Act were ratified by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in December 2019. Under the amended legislation, local councils will receive 40% of revenue from leasing land, islands and lagoons, and 100% of the revenue generated from land and other resources in the direct jurisdiction of the council.
