MSS begins cargo ferry service between Tuticorin and Addu/Thinadhoo

Maldives State Shipping (MSS) has started operating the cargo ferry service from Tuticorin, India to Addu City and Thinadhoo in Huvadhu Atoll.

The national shipping line announced its cargo ship MV Bonthi II has departed to Tuticorin on her maiden voyage, commencing the new direct service between Tuticorin, Addu and Huvadhu Atoll. MSS has also opened the opportunity for bookings on the new cargo ferry service, through its hotline and email.

Following the inauguration of the service, Hithadhoo Port Limited (HPL) in Addu City stated the commencement of the service is an important milestone for the people of southern atolls, as it will enable a more efficient transport of cargo, and bring down the price of goods. HPL said the businesses in all southern atolls will reap the benefits of the new service.

Meanwhile, the High Commission of India in the Maldives tweeted that in just over 2 months of commencement of the direct cargo ferry service between southern ports of India with Kulhudhuffushi and Male’, another direct service has connected Tuticorin with Addu City and Thinadhoo in Huvadhu Atoll. The Indian High Commission welcomed the initiative by MSS and the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation.

MV Bonthi II is an 86-metre long cargo vessel, capable of carrying 2,719 tonnes of cargo. The vessel is expected to reach India within this weekend.
