Government will continue to assist the homeless: Gender Minister

Minister of Gender, Family and Social Services Aishath Mohamed Didi has stated the government will continue to assist homeless people in the Maldives by providing them with temporary shelters and food.

Speaking on the concern raised about the people sleeping on the streets of Male’, Gender Minister Aishath Mohamed Didi noted the ministry has attended to over 500 such people since April this year. She noted the ministry assists homeless people by providing them with temporary shelters and food, as well as working with local councils and families to reintegrate them. She said the government will continue to attend to such cases.

The gender ministry had earlier revealed 553 people were provided food following the lockdown imposed in the Greater Male’ Region due to the COVID-19 pandemic, while 253 people were provided temporary shelters. The ministry revealed most of the people who were provided temporary shelters have now been sent back to their native islands following the ease of restrictions in the Male’ Region.
