COVID-19 has underlined the significance of the UN: Foreign Minister

Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid has stated the COVID-19 pandemic has underlined the importance of multilateral cooperation and the significance of the United Nations (UN).

In a statement released on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the UN, Foreign Minister Shahid said this year the world has been reminded all the more of UN’s significance due to the unprecedented global health crisis created by COVID-19. The foreign minister noted the Maldives has always remained steadfast in the principles enshrined in the UN Charter, calling for global peace, economic prosperity and sustainable development for all. He added the UN has remained a true and reliable partner for the Maldives for 55 years since the country joined the UN in 1965.

Minister Shahid further stated the Maldives’ journey in the UN has shown that while size may constitute a perennial consideration for small states, all nations have an equal voice to contribute to the international community. He added the Maldives’ track record at the UN is a testament that small states are not only valuable partners, but part of the solution to address the threats facing the world, especially the new and emerging threats of the 21st century.

In his statement, Minister Shahid highlighted for 75 years, the UN has stood as the universal body for globalization and multilateralism – a beacon that inspires and drives global solidarity. The minister stated the Maldives has unwavering faith in the organisation, in its pursuit of a better future. He added the UN ensures the world is connected, and can achieve a brighter future together with mutual respect and understanding, despite the global challenges.
