Supreme Court Justice Shujune elected to UN Subcommittee on the Prevention of Torture

Supreme Court Justice Aisha Shujune Muhammad has been elected to the UN Subcommittee on the Prevention of Torture (UNSPT) for the 2021- 2024 term.

The 12-member UNSPT is elected under the UN Optional Protocol to Convention Against Torture. This is the second time Justice Shujune has been elected to the committee, having also served in the UNSPT from 2011 to 2018. She was elected among 19 candidates who contested in the election held in Geneva, Switzerland.

Following the election of Justice Shujune to the UNSPT, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih posted a tweet congratulating her on the election. He expressed confidence that Justice Shujune would prove an immense credit to the Subcommittee in fulfilling its mandate.
