Tourism Minister hopeful of seeing 1 million tourist arrivals in 2021

Minister of Tourism Dr. Abdulla Mausoom has expressed hope of bringing in 1 million tourists to the Maldives in 2021.

Speaking on a programme aired on PSM News, the tourism minister said discussions are ongoing with relevant stakeholders of the tourism industry to determine a rough number of arrivals which Maldives may witness on 2021. The minister stated although stakeholders have given a rough figure of about 750,000, it is estimated the number will significantly increase next year. He said even 700,000 arrivals to the Maldives next year will be a huge achievement for the country, considering the situation of tourism industry globally.

Maldives reopened its borders for tourists on July 15, more than three months after borders were closed due to COVID-19. In the three months since borders were reopened, tourist arrivals have been increasing steadily.
