State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has launched a programme to provide employment opportunities for inmates released on parole.
The programme is a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative of STELCO, aimed at supporting the efforts of the government to enhance social welfare. The agreement for the programme was signed by Managing Director of STELCO Hassan Mughunee, Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla and Commissioner of Prisons Ahmed Mohamed Fulhu.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Managing Director of STELCO Hassan Mughunee said the company believes state institutions and companies have an important role to play in helping inmates released on parole to reintegrate back into the society as responsible individuals. Noting STELCO has always carried out the national responsibility of facilitating talented and capable youth to serve the nation, Mughunee said the company will provide its full support to the government in creating opportunities for individuals who wish to serve the country. He added the basis of the service provided by STELCO is work discipline, which the company hopes to instill in every individual working at the company.
The agreement for the employment programme was signed for a duration of one year. However, STELCO said the programme will be extended based on the outcome of the first year. The company said job opportunities will be provided under the programme in all 35 islands with STELCO operations.
