Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla has stated the efforts to restrict the supply of drugs to the Maldives has been successful as suppliers are no longer given any political protection.
In a tweet posted after Maldives Police Service (MPS) seized 80 kilos of drugs in an operation conducted in Addu City, Home Minister Imran said the current administration will not protect drug suppliers and will ensure they are punished in accordance to the laws and regulations. He noted the efforts to restrict the supply of drugs into the Maldives has been successful because drug suppliers and dealers are no longer given any political protection. He also acknowledged the work done by the Drug Enforcement Department (DED) of MPS, noting the successful operation in Addu City was made possible by the technical ability of DED officers.
The drugs operation in Addu City was carried out by DED, in collaboration with the MPS Drug Intelligence Unit, Marine Police and the South Police Division. Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed revealed about 80 kilos of drugs were seized during the operation, after intercepting a dinghy travelling with the drugs. He noted the operation was carried out solely on locally developed intelligence and policing work.
