Ministry of Education has decided to resume school sessions for grades 9 and above on October 4.
The ministry said the decision to commence school sessions for key stages 4 and 5 was taken following extensive deliberations with Health Protection Agency (HPA). However, the education ministry revealed classes for remaining grades will be conducted online.
On July 1, the administration decided to reopen schools in islands without active COVID-19 cases after keeping it closed for over three months. Students of Grades 9 to 12 in Male' City also commenced studies on July 1 and the administration planned to resume classes for grades 7 to 8 by mid-August.
However, due to the increase in COVID-19 cases, the education ministry closed the schools again. Upon consultation with stakeholders, the education ministry permitted students of grades 11 and 12 to physically attend the classes to prepare for their final examinations.
The latest statistics show the daily case numbers have begun to decrease in the Maldives, although HPA has stated it is not yet safe to lift or ease the restrictions.
