Vulnerable countries need international assistance to revive economies: President

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated vulnerable countries such as the Maldives will need international assistance to revive the economies.

The president made the remarks in his address at High Level Meeting to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the United Nations (UN). The event was held virtually in light of the ongoing pandemic.

Noting the Maldives is proud to be a member state of the UN, President Solih expressed full commitment to the multilateral order heralded by the 1945 San Francisco Conference. Stressing the immediate task confronting the global community is recovering from the disease’s impacts, the president expressed that vulnerable countries such as the Maldives will need international assistance to revive our economies and restore our major industries especially the vital tourism industry to full strength. Further, he expressed the Maldives is prepared to stand shoulder to shoulder with the rest of the global community to confront this and other challenges, in the spirit of multilateralism, as a proud member of the UN.

As the president expressed in his statement, the Maldives uses UN platforms to engage with our international partners on every conceivable issue, from climate change to counter-terrorism, to trade and regional institutionalism. The president emphasised that values enshrined in UN Charter will be especially important to tackle one of the greatest challenges to ever confront the post-war global order: COVID-19.
