Import-export revenue down by 66% in August

Maldives Customs Service has revealed the import-export revenue generated by the state during August 2020 had decreased by 66% compared to the same month last year.

Statistics of Maldives Customs Service revealed the Maldives generated a revenue of USD 6.6 million from import and export last month, compared to USD 19.3 million in August 2019. The statistics revealed the total value of imports last month was USD 136 million, down 35% from USD 214 million in August 2019. Meanwhile, the total value of exports had gone down from USD 16.6 million in August 2019 to USD 16.3 million last month.

Most of the goods imported last month came from China, India, Singapore, Oman and the UAE. Meanwhile, Thailand accounted for 42% of all exports from the Maldives in August. Other countries to which goods were exported from the Maldives include Germany, UK, France and Italy.

The Customs statistics also revealed the number of cargo vessels arriving and departing from the Maldives had increased in August 2020, compared to the same month last year. As such, 146 entries and 164 departures were recorded in August 2020, compared to 61 entries and 59 departures in August 2019.
