No foreign military presence in the Maldives: MNDF

Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has affirmed there is no foreign military presence in the Maldives, despite rumors that armed soldiers from India are conducting military activities in the Maldives.

Speaking to the press regarding the defence policy of MNDF, Chief of Defence Force Major General Abdulla Shamaal noted some people have been raising questions over the military relations established by MNDF with foreign armies. Assuring the public that MNDF will remain steadfast in protecting the independence and sovereignty of the nation, Major General Shamaal affirmed there is no foreign military presence in the country. He added the only foreign soldiers active in the Maldives are soldiers sent for technical expertise across different training and humanitarian programmes.

Speaking at the press conference, Vice Chief of Defence Force Brigadier General Abdul Raheem Abdul Latheef shared details of the efforts undertaken to ensure maritime safety and security of the Maldives. He noted the upgrade of radar systems in 10 regions across the Maldives, which is conducted under the grant assistance of India, will be completed by the end of the year. He also revealed automatic identification systems are being established under US aid, which will facilitate the surveillance of distances between 5-7 kilometres in night vision.

MNDF acknowledged the support and assistance provided by its international partners in times of need. MNDF said important work is being carried out to ensure the safety of the Indian Ocean, by eliminating threats of piracy.
