Parliament approves appointment of 3 new members to HRCM

The Parliament of the Maldives has approved the appointment of three new members to the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).

The new members approved to be appointed to HRCM are Dr. Ahmed Adhuham Abdulla, Moomina Waheed and Aminath Shafa’ath Abdul Razzaq. Adhuham and Moomina were approved with votes from 61 parliamentarians, while Shafa’ath was approved with votes from 58 parliamentarians.

Adhuham, Moomina and Shafaa’ath were the top three nominations among the 8 nominations submitted to the parliament by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih following the end of the application period. The applications were evaluated by the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights and Gender.

The new members will fill three of the four membership positions vacated at HRCM following the resignation of three members, Aminath Eenas, Aishath Afreen and Moosa Kaleyfaan, and the dismissal of Mohamed Zahid through a no-confidence vote at the parliament. A dismissal motion had been launched against all four members after the parliament conducted an inquiry on their failure to fulfill their responsibilities in protecting basic human rights of vulnerable communities and in taking action against human rights violations in the country.
