Food vendors were asked to register to ensure health and safety: Economic Ministry

Ministry of Economic Development has stated all food vendors were asked to register at the ministry in an effort to better implement the health and safety guidelines set by Health Protection Agency (HPA).

Speaking at a press conference held at Health Emergency Operation Centre (HEOC), Registrar of Companies Maryam Visam said home-based food vendors or self-employed individuals are not required to register under the Business Registration Act. Citing a circular issued by economic ministry earlier, Visam said businesses conducted to benefit financially or to profit from the service are required to register which includes cafes, restaurants, canteens, tea shops and bakeries. She assured individuals preparing food in their home kitchens are not counted as such businesses.

Last week, HPA announced measures will be taken against all food vendors and micro-operations that fail to register their services at authorities. Director of HPA Ahmed Nasir said the decision was made in the intention to address health and safety concerns, following complaints of unregistered food and beverage services conducted via online platforms.
