The Parliament of the Maldives has approved the ratification of the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance (CED) in the Maldives.
On June 24, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih decided to ratify the CED in the Maldives, following consultations with his cabinet. The treaty was reviewed by the parliament and approved with votes from 56 parliamentarians.
The cabinet expressed ratifying the treaty is indicative of the commitment of the Maldives to upholding human rights in the global arena and within the borders of the country.
The CED was adopted into international law by the member states of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on December 20, 2006. The treaty came into effect on December, 23 2010.
The Maldives signed the convention on February 6, 2007. However, the Maldives has not yet ratified the treaty. During the discussions on ratifying the treaty, the cabinet expressed ratifying the treaty is indicative of the commitment of the Maldives to upholding human rights in the global arena and within the borders of the country.
Of the 98 countries that have signed the treaty, 62 have ratified it thus far.
