Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has expressed his full confidence and trust in Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid.
The speaker made the statement in response to the initiation of a no-confidence motion against the foreign minister, raised by Parliamentarian Abdulla Jabir. In a tweet posted on August 21, Speaker Nasheed expressed his full support and trust in Minister Shahid.
Parliamentarian Jabir who proposed the motion said the current foreign policy has long failed and that Shahid must be held responsible for it. He also accused Minister Shahid of partiality in establishing diplomatic ties with countries.
Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid is one of the most experienced and accomplished diplomats in foreign relations. Since assuming office in 2018, Minister Shahid has reestablished bilateral ties with several countries which had its ties with the Maldives deteriorated due to the foreign policy of the previous administration.
