Maldives always open for international cooperation: Foreign Minister

Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid has stated the Maldives will always be open for support and cooperation from the international community in the development of the country.

The foreign minister made the remarks during a virtual reception held with the Embassy of the Maldives in Japan on the occasion of the 55th Independence Day of the Maldives.

Speaking at the virtual reception, Minister Shahid expressed Japan is one of the most important development partners of the Maldives. In this regard, he highlighted important projects undertaken in the Maldives under the assistance of Japan, such as the development of schools and the seawall surrounding Male’ City.

The minister further noted Japan is always among the first and most generous countries to respond to any situation faced by the Maldives. Stating the Maldives-Japan relationship is based on mutual respect and understanding, the minister expressed unwavering commitment to strengthening friendship even further in the years to come.

In his remarks, the foreign minister also highlighted the importance of support and assistance from the international community as the country aims to build back better following the impacts of COVID-19. Noting international support has been crucial in the progress the country has made since becoming a member of the United Nations (UN) in 1965, the minister said the Maldives will always be open for international support and cooperation in the efforts to develop the country.

The virtual reception was attended by Ambassador of the Maldives to Japan Ibrahim Uvais and senior officials of the Government of Japan.
