63% of SAP projects planned for 2020 underway: President’s Office

The President’s Office has revealed 63% of the projects planned for 2020 under the Strategic Action Plan (SAP) of the government has commenced.

Speaking on a programme aired on PSM News, Policy Secretary of the President’s Office Aminath Shauna said all 19 ministries of the government are working hard to achieve the objectives of the SAP, despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. In this regard, she noted 63% of the SAP projects planned for the year has commenced, of which 24% have been completed and 39% are still ongoing.

The SAP outlines the developmental targets and priorities of the government for the five-year period from 2019 to 2023. It sets out the strategic goals that would help achieve key developmental milestones pledged under the manifesto of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

The SAP is composed of five main sectors, which are Blue Economy, Caring State, Dignified Families, Island Lifestyle and Good Governance. Detailing the progress of projects and activities under each sector, the policy secretary revealed 494 activities were planned under Blue Economy of which 36% have been completed and 23% are ongoing. She stated 734 activities were planned under Caring State of which 15% were completed and 51% are ongoing, while 416 activities were planned under Dignified Families of which 24% were completed and 40% are ongoing. She also stated 1,130 activities were planned under Island Lifestyle sector, of which 24% were completed and 30% are ongoing, while 28% of activities planned under Good Governance have been completed with a further 48% ongoing.

The policy secretary noted the SAP does not focus solely on infrastructure development projects, adding the SAP provides the central policy framework that guides the overall development direction of the Maldives. She said important efforts are being undertaken as part of the SAP goals in order to improve the quality of services provided by the government and to improve the standard of living of the Maldivian people.
