Academic year to be completed in June 2021

Ministry of Education has announced the ongoing academic year will be completed in June 2021.

The education ministry has shared details of the revised calendar of the ongoing academic year, which has been disrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As per the revised calendar, the first term will conclude on December 3 which will be followed by a 5-week term break. The second term is scheduled to begin on January 10, 2021 and conclude on June 24, 2021.

The education ministry further revealed the new academic year is scheduled to begin on August 10, 2021. The ministry said a decision has not yet been made on making the changes to the academic year permanent.

Schools in the Greater Male’ Region have been closed until August 19, in order to control the spread of COVID-19 in the capital which has accelerated rapidly over the past few weeks. The education ministry stated lessons are conducted online during this period. The ministry added the decision to close schools will be revised depending on how the COVID-19 situation develops.

On July 1, the administration decided to reopen schools in islands without active COVID-19 cases after keeping it closed for over three months. Students of Grades 9 to 12 in Male' City also commenced studies on July 1 and the administration planned to resume classes for grades 7 to 8 by mid-August. However, the recent few weeks have seen a significant increase of COVID-19 cases in the country.
