Maldives records highest daily number of COVID-19 cases

Maldives has recorded the highest daily number of COVID-19 cases, with the detection of 215 cases on August 2.

The latest statistics from Health Protection Agency (HPA) revealed 215 cases were reported in the Maldives between 1800hrs on August 1 and 1800hrs on August 2. The cases include 149 Maldivians, 54 Bangladeshis, 7 Indians, 2 Sri Lankans, 2 Nepalis and 1 Filipino.

This is the highest daily figure of COVID-19 cases reported in the Maldives, surpassing the record figure from April 30 when 179 cases were reported. This was also the highest number of Maldivians to contract COVID-19 in one day, exceeding the figure of 134 Maldivians who tested positive on the previous day.

While the total number of COVID-19 cases in the Maldives has risen to 4,164, the number of active cases has risen to a record figure of 1,488. The active cases also include a record 84 patients requiring hospitalisation. Further, 18 people have died from COVID-19 in the Maldives, with the latest death recorded on August 2 when an 89-year-old man passed away at Hulhumale’ Medical Facility.

In addition to Male' City, COVID-19 cases have been detected from 10 islands across the country since travel restrictions were lifted last month.
