Individual responsibility key to economic revival: Foreign Minister

Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid has stated fulfilling the individual responsibility of each and every citizen of the Maldives is crucial in reviving the economy following the COVID-19 pandemic. The minister made the remarks at the virtual ceremony held to inaugurate the COVID-19 treatment facilities established in Addu City, Fuvahmulah City and Ihavandhoo, Haa Alifu Atoll.

Speaking at the ceremony, Foreign Minister Shahid said the rising number of COVID-19 cases in the Maldives is alarming, noting the continuous spread of the disease cannot be taken lightly as it is claiming many lives. The minister also highlighted the economic regression caused by the pandemic, adding the economy of the Maldives is in a vulnerable state due to COVID-19. Noting economic revival can only be brought through joint efforts and cooperation from all individuals, the minister highlighted the importance of fulfilling the individual responsibility on each and every citizen to ensure the spread of COVID-19 is contained.

Speaking further, the minister noted the preparations of the country for a surge in COVID-19 are now nearly complete, with the establishment of dedicated treatment facilities in seven regions across the country. However, he said the spread of the disease among healthcare workers could lead to a major emergency and urged the public to follow the instructions of healthcare professionals in order to avoid such a situation.

In his speech, the foreign minister acknowledged and appreciated the efforts of all healthcare workers and other frontline workers active amid the COVID-19 pandemic. He also called on the public to continue observing precautionary measures to stay safe from COVID-19, even during the upcoming national and religious celebrations.
