Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) has called on the government to strengthen the measures in place to safeguard the country from COVID-19. The party headed by former President Maumoon Abdul Qayyoom made the remarks in a statement released on the occasion of the Independence Day of the Maldives.
In the statement, MRM noted the Independence Day has arrived at a time the country is reeling from the effects of COVID-19, with the number of new cases rising on daily basis since lockdown restrictions were eased. The party called for strong and effective measures to safeguard the nation from COVID-19 in order to return to a normal situation where the people can move and work freely without the fear of COVID-19. The party also called on the public to observe personal safety measures when going outside, such as maintaining social distancing and wearing masks.
In the statement, MRM also highlighted the importance of the country working together to protect its independence and sovereignty. Noting the efforts to maintain independence can be more challenging than gaining independence, MRM stated both the government and the public play a role in protecting the independence and sovereignty of the country as stipulated in the Constitution of the Maldives.
In the statement, MRM conveyed greetings of the Independence Day to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and the people of the Maldives.
