Maldives will remain strong in the Indian Ocean: Parliament Speaker

Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has stated the independence of the Maldives is highly connected to its strong position in the Indian Ocean.

In a message sent on the occasion of Independence Day, Speaker Nasheed said the Maldivian territory in the Indian Ocean is a crucial component of the independence and sovereignty of the country. The speaker said Maldivians are spread across 1,000 miles from north to south and 600 miles from east to west in the Indian Ocean, noting the country holds a larger political and economic territory than Saudi Arabia. He praised the efforts of the Maldivian military in protecting the Maldivian territory in the Indian Ocean, adding the country will remain strong in the Indian Ocean.

The Maldives gained independence on July 26, 1965, after 77 years as a British protectorate.
