Meanwhile, in a message released on the occasion of the Independence Day, Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla said the dignity and happiness of a society is based on its freedom and independence. Noting independence is a valuable gift bestowed upon the country, the home minister said the true value of independence is often only felt when it is taken away.
The home minister highlighted the Independence Day is marked this year during a time when several people have been forced to undergo the difficulties due to COVID-19. He said the country must work together in unison to overcome the pandemic and return to a normal life.
The Maldives gained independence on July 26, 1965, after 77 years as a British protectorate.
