12 police officers dismissed this year for breaching professional standards

Maldives Police Service (MPS) has revealed 12 police officers have been dismissed this year for breaching professional standards.

The statistics of the Professional Standards Command of MPS revealed 97 complaints have been submitted this year in relation to police officers. The complaints include 18 cases of breaching police regulations, 10 cases of disciplinary misconduct, 10 cases of influence-peddling and 15 cases of negligence.

The statistics further revealed action was taken on 18 officers following the investigation process, including 12 officers who were dismissed. Further, some officers have been demoted, while some have been transferred to a different location. The actions taken also include mandating the completion of a special training and increasing close supervision.

The statistics revealed 128 complaints were submitted in relation to police misconduct last year, with action was taken against 40 officers. The records, which are available from 2016, indicate the highest number of complaints were submitted in 2017. In this regard, 141 complaints were submitted while action was taken against 58 officers in 2017.
