Judge Hassan Ali resigns amid JSC investigation

Judge at the High Court of the Maldives Hassan Ali has submitted his resignation amid the ongoing investigation by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) against him.

Judge Hassan Ali is implicated in the investigation into the kidnapping and murder of journalist Ahmed Rilwan Abdulla, for attempting to forge travel documentation that would depict that Rilwan died abroad. He is suspected of collaborating with two police officers in this attempt.

JSC suspended Hassan Ali on September 16, 2019, citing the criminal investigation conducted by the Presidential Commission on Murders and Enforced Disappearances (DDCom). On July 12, 2020, JSC requested a written response from Hassan Ali within 7 days regarding the accusations against him. However, he resigned without responding to the accusations.

Hassan Ali was appointed as a judge at the High Court on March 18, 2018. Previously, he had served as the Controller of Immigration.
