Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla has stated the rehabilitation of one person ensures protection and safety for generations.
In a statement sent to a virtual meeting held to present research findings on Technical Assistance Needs Assessment in the Area of Juvenile Justice for Children, Minister Imran stated the research has proposed gaps, challenges, needs and opportunities in the area of juvenile justice system in the Maldives. He further urged the government authorities and the judiciary to work together to move away delinquent juveniles from criminal justice system in the country.
The home minister said the public must also change perception towards delinquent juveniles as the root cause lies within the society. He also called for proactive solutions towards their problems rather than always looking for reactive measures. In this regard, he called for more research in the area to set policies and guidelines.
Further, the minister also raised concern as the report of child sexual abuse is on the rise. He said it is more worrying as many of the abusers are either family or close friends of the family. He stated the solution lies in authorities, the public and all non-government organisations working together to fight the issue.
The home minister concluded his statement by appreciating the support the government receives from international organisations such as the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and United Nations International Children's Fund (UNICEF).
