Special permit no longer required to bring expatriate workers to the Maldives

Ministry of Economic Development has announced a special permit is no longer required to bring expatriate workers to the Maldives.

Since March this year, the economic ministry mandated expatriate workers to obtain additional permits to work in the Maldives amid COVID-19 pandemic. However, the ministry said Maldives Immigration has nullified the policy which requires expatriate workers to obtain additional permits to travel to the Maldives.

The policy enforced in March required all expatriates returning from vacation, as well as new expatriates who have been approved for employment, to seek a special permit before entering the Maldives via an application submitted to the economic ministry 48 hours before arrival. The decision to nullify the policy coincides with the reopening of the international borders of the Maldives after four months.
