HRCM disrupted with leaves and resignations

Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) faces disruptions following the resignation of its President Aminath Enas and member Aishath Afreen Mohamed.

The resignation of two members came at a time the Parliament of the Maldives was seeking to dismiss them from the HRCM. Furthermore, members Moosa Ali Kaleyfaan and Naiween Abdulla are currently on leave and only Vice President Mohamed Zahid is attending office. The five-year term of members Moosa and Naiween is also nearing completion.

The President's Office has opened applications for four membership positions before the two members resigned, as the tenures of four incumbent members are set to expire except for Zahid who was appointed in 2017.

Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights and Gender is currently probing HRCM amid allegations it has failed to fulfill their responsibilities. However, Zahid was the only member who attended the parliament for questioning. Meanwhile, Enas sent a written reply to the parliament before submitting her resignation.
