National airline evacuates 96 locals stranded in Sri Lanka

The national flag carrier, Maldivian, has evacuated 96 locals stranded in Sri Lanka.

As part of the efforts to evacuate locals stranded in foreign countries, the government of the Maldives and relevant authorities in the respective countries have so far facilitated the return of over 4,000 locals. The most recent is the third evacuation trip scheduled to Sri Lanka by the national airline. Maldivian has evacuated locals stranded in India, Malaysia and Thailand in the past months, in addition to Sri Lanka.

Thousands of Maldivians are unable to return back to the country following the closure of borders and lockdowns imposed amid the global COVID-19 pandemic.
