Maldives Sports Corporation abolished amid poor performance

Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment Ahmed Mahloof has announced the decision to abolish the Maldives Sports Corporation Limited (MSC) in efforts to minimise the expenses of the state.

Minister Mahloof was summoned to the Parliamentary Committee on State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) to question about the poor functioning of the MSC. Answering the questions, the minister revealed the MSC was abolished upon advisory of the Ministry of Finance due to its poor functioning despite a large amount spent by the state to implement its mandate. He stated the decision was made after extensive deliberations during the cabinet working group.

The MSC was established in March 2015 under the Sports Act. The corporation was formed aiming to develop sports throughout the country by creating and advocating for equal opportunities for all registered sports clubs and associations, as well as utilising various sporting infrastructures to generate income within the industry.
