Maldives and the US discuss strengthening bilateral cooperation

The Maldives and the US have held discussions on strengthening bilateral and multilateral cooperation, as well as the response to COVID-19.

In a tweet, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives Abdulla Shahid revealed he had a conversation with the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on enhancing mutual cooperation, and the response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The foreign minister thanked the US government for providing support and assistance towards economic relief and recovery of the Maldives.

Meanwhile, Secretary Pompeo also acknowledged he had a fruitful conversation with Foreign Minister Shahid, adding the US will continue working with the Maldives to fight COVID-19 and promote sustainable economic development. He added the US looks forward to growing the relationship with the Maldives and strengthening the bilateral partnership.

The Maldives established diplomatic ties with the US in 1966. Over the years, the US has assisted the Maldives to promote and enhance democratic institutions, maritime security, counterterrorism, and law enforcement cooperation.
