Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has concluded the airport development project in Maavaarulu, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll.
The project to develop a domestic airport in Maavarulu was handed over to a contractor in 2011. However, the government of the Maldives cancelled the agreement as the contractor failed to initiate the project.

Under phase 1, MTCC completed the construction of a 1,200-metre by 30-metre runway, a 60-metre by 15-metre taxiway and a 120-metre by 45-metre apron of the airport. Under phase 2, MTCC completed the construction of a passenger terminal building, a fire building, a staff quarters, a powerhouse, a guard post and a restaurant.
Moreover, MTCC completed the harbour expansion project in addition to the airport development project in Maavaarulu. MTCC revealed harbour expansion project includes the construction of a 199-metre breakwater, a 30-metre revetment, a 50-metre quay wall and harbour pavements of an area of 250 square metres. MTCC also installed navigational aids, mooring rings and streetlights as part of the project.
