IPU to investigate events which led to MP Shiyam sustaining injuries

The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) has decided to investigate the events which led to Parliamentarian Ahmed Shiyam sustaining injuries during the parliament sitting held on June 1.

Shiyam sustained injuries during the altercations which followed after Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed ordered the eviction of Shiyam from the parliament chamber for yelling and obstructing parliament proceedings. Following the incident, Shiyam submitted a formal complaint to the IPU requesting an inquiry into the incident. IPU has notified Shiyam that the Committee on Human Rights of Parliamentarians will be probing the case, noting areas which concern the freedom and honour of parliamentarians will be taken very seriously.

During the sitting on June 1, the parliament passed the constitutional amendment to extend the term of local councils until new councillors can be elected following the COVID-19 pandemic. Shiyam and a few other parliamentarians sustained injuries amid the confrontations which took place during the sitting.
