Maldives Immigration has launched a nationwide operation to locate undocumented workers across the country.
The operation was launched in assistance with Maldives Police Service (MPS) and local councils. As part of the operation, 22 illegal workers from Himmafushi in Kaafu Atoll, and Dhangethi and Maamigili in Alifu Dhaalu Atoll were taken into the custody of Maldives Immigration. Immigration said expatriates who are socially challenging will also be identified along with the undocumented expatriates during the operation.
The number of expatriates in the Maldives are on the rise with an increase in offences committed by expatriates in recent times. The government of the Maldives has also launched a programme to repatriate undocumented workers to their respective countries.
