Maldives and Bangladesh discuss enhancing trade ties

Maldives and Bangladesh have discussed enhancing trade ties, as well as regularising and repatriating undocumented workers.

The discussions were held by Minister of Economic Development Fayyaz Ismail and High Commissioner of Bangladesh to the Maldives Mohamed Nazmul Hassan. During the meeting, discussions were held to enhance bilateral trade and investments between both countries. Further discussions focused on providing assistance on the efforts to regularise and repatriate undocumented workers to Bangladesh.

Earlier, Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated two flights will be operated each week to repatriate Bangladeshi nationals wishing to return back to their country. The ministry revealed while 2,689 workers have been repatriated to Bangladesh, the aim is to send back 5,000 undocumented workers within the next three months.

The government of the Maldives revealed one of the biggest challenges in the fight against COVID-19 was to minimise the spread among workers living in congested spaces.
