Popularity of the Maldives as a tourist destination has not decreased: MMPRC

Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) has stated the popularity of the Maldives as a tourist destination has not decreased despite closing borders due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking to PSM News, Managing Director of MMPRC Thoyyib Mohamed said the marketing and promotional activities have continued without interruption, despite the COVID-19 pandemic. In this regard, Thoyyib said MMPRC, Ministry of Tourism and the stakeholders of the tourism industry have collaborated together to promote the Maldives as a tourist destination on a wide range of virtual platforms. He added as a result of the tireless efforts of all relevant institutions and authorities, the Maldives remains a popular tourist destination despite closed borders.

The managing director noted tourists from a wide range of international markets have placed their bookings to come to the Maldives, as soon as the borders reopen. He said the popularity of the Maldives is also evident from different articles published worldwide.

The government had earlier projected 400,000 tourist arrivals after reopening the borders in July. However, MMPRC has expressed hope of exceeding the projected figure.
