Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has revealed the first phase of the new VIP terminal building at Velana International Airport (VIA) will be completed in the last quarter of the year.
In a tweet, MACL revealed facade and interior works of the facility under development in VIA are ongoing. Noting existing works of the first phase can be completed within 2 months, MACL said the lockdowns and restrictions imposed in other countries due to COVID-19 caused interruptions in bringing equipment required for the projects conducted as part of the expansion of VIA. MACL also highlighted the situation of COVID-19 delayed the arrival of technical experts of the contractor.
The new CIP/VIP building is built on the western side of VIA at the same location of the existing VIP terminal. MACL said the 4-storey building developed in an area of 6,800 square metres will consist of modern facilities. MACL added the new building will have ample spaces for CIP customers and separate lounges for VIP and VVIPs.
The construction of the building is to be completed under two phases. Under the first phase, 2,200 square metres of the facility is being redeveloped.
