MIFCO registers a record sale of canned tuna

Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has registered a record sale of canned tuna during Ramadan.

Speaking to PSM News, Managing Director Ismail Fauzee said the demand for products offered by MIFCO rose significantly as Ramadan fell during a period of lockdown amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Fauzee added a significant rise was recorded in the sale of canned tuna products, highlighting about 150,000 cases of canned tuna were sold during Ramadan.

The managing director of the state-owned enterprise said the global COVID-19 pandemic impacted the fisheries sector similar to other industries. However, he said some vessels and fishermen have embarked on fishing trips with the leniency granted.
