Target is to bring in 1 million tourists this year: Tourism Minister

Minister of Tourism Ali Waheed has stated the target is to bring in 1 million tourists to the Maldives this year.

Speaking to PSM News, Minister Ali Waheed said the ministry is working with Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) and stakeholders of the tourism industry to rebuild the sector following the COVID-19 pandemic. The minister said a target is important when working on rebuilding the tourism sector, the minister said the current target is to reach the 1 million mark for tourist arrivals in 2020. He expressed the target is not unachievable with hard work and dedication.

The tourism ministry is working on reopening borders and resuming tourism operations in July. Minister Ali Waheed has assured the required safety measures will be in place to safeguard locals as well as tourists, upon reopening borders. He said the COVID-19 situation will be monitored and analysed every 14 days.

While the tourism ministry plans to reopen resorts and safaris for business in July, local guesthouses are expected to be opened in August.
