WHO to support preparations to reopen schools in the Maldives

World Health Organisation (WHO) has decided to support the preparations to reopen schools in the Maldives following the COVID-19 pandemic.

The decision was made following a virtual meeting held between Representative of WHO to the Maldives Dr. Arvind Mathur and senior officials of the Ministry of Education. Following the meeting, the education ministry stated WHO has agreed to provide the items required for disinfection of schools, and to train personnel for the disinfection process.

The education ministry earlier revealed efforts are underway to reopen schools after ensuring the safety and cleanliness of schools in order to mitigate the risk of COVID-19 transmission. As such, the ministry said temperature checks will be carried out on every student before being allowed entry into the school.

Schools have been closed in the Maldives since March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While a date for reopening has not yet been finalised, the ministry has stated schools will not be reopened before the scheduled first term holidays.

Meanwhile, the televised classes organised by the education ministry have resumed on May 25. The classes were suspended in April 15 following the lockdown imposed in the Greater Male’ Region.
