Sporting activities to resume in islands not under monitoring

Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment has decided to grant permission to resume sporting activities in islands which are not under monitoring by Health Protection Agency (HPA).

The youth ministry said the decision to lift the ban on sporting activities in islands with no confirmed or suspected cases of COVID-19 was made due to the large number of requests being submitted to the ministry by the youth. The ministry said the decision was made upon consulting HPA and the Technical Advisory Group (TAG).

The youth ministry stated sporting activities can be resumed in islands which have not been put under monitoring amid the COVID-19 pandemic and islands in which the monitoring status was lifted more than 14 days ago. However, the ministry stated activities with large gatherings of people cannot be encouraged and that physical distancing must be maintained during activities. The ministry also stated the permission can be revoked any time based on the changing situation of COVID-19 in the Maldives.

Meanwhile, Ministry of Islamic Affairs has also granted permission to resume prayer congregations in islands which are not under monitoring. However, the public has been advised to take personal safety measures when going to mosques in order to mitigate the risk of transmitting COVID-19.
