Academic year of 2021 to commence mid-year, O'Levels in May/June

Ministry of Education has announced the decision to postpone Lower Secondary Examinations scheduled for October/November 2020 to May/June 2021.

A statement from the ministry stated along with the decision, Shahada Saanaviyya exams at Al Madhrasathul Arabiyyathul Islamiyya have also been postponed to May/June next year. With the decision, all current grade 10 students will remain at their respective schools until their lower secondary examinations are completed next year.

Additionally, the statement from the ministry announced the decision to commence academic school year during mid 2021 as advised by the Social Council. The statement added the ministry is currently discussing the decision with stakeholders to determine if the chance will remain permanent.

Although the majority of Maldivian students complete their lower secondary examinations during October/November examinations sessions, a small number of students also sit the May/June sessions. However, with the decision of the ministry to change the session due to COVID-19 pandemic, the Maldivian education sector will see a major shift in its academic calendar.
