Over 4,000 fined and 260 arrested for breaching lockdown orders

Maldives Police Service (MPS) has revealed over 4,000 people have been fined for breaching lockdown orders in the Greater Male’ Region, while another 260 people have been arrested.

The Greater Male’ Region has been under lockdown since April 15. A police permit is required to go out for essential purposes during the lockdown. MPS has warned individuals who are found on the streets without a permit will be fined by USD 65, while multiple violations could lead to arrest or transfer to a quarantine facility.

MPS revealed 4,803 people have been fined since the beginning of lockdown, while 260 people have been arrested. MPS noted 172 people were fined and 11 people were arrested on May 21 from Male’, Hulhumale’ and Villimale’.

Authorities have urged the public to stay indoors and observe safety precautions as the COVID-19 outbreak in the Maldives is expected to hit its peak during the last two weeks of May.
